Background

Agriculture and Rural Livelihoods

Agriculture is a critical engine for economic growth in Africa and, for a majority of the continents citizens, provides the only means of income and livelihood. Unfortunately, the agricultural sector in most of Africa remains underdeveloped and isolated from global markets leaving rural populations without opportunities for employment and advancement. The results of this are vast numbers of people living in abject poverty without the resources necessary to improve their standard of living. The development of sustainable businesses in high-value niche sectors, however, could stimulate agricultural growth that will not only improve the livelihoods of rural Africa but also have a multiplier effect on the rest of the economy.

The Natural Products Sector

The natural plant products and whole foods markets have been experiencing enormous growth and expansion over the past ten years. The booming world market for traditional medicines and alternative therapies alone has been estimated to be worth $60 billion annually. With its rich, yet untapped botanical kingdom and indigenous knowledge pool, Africa is in the ideal position to benefit from this burgeoning market. As a USAID funded initiative in partnership with several leading universities and the private sector, PFID/NP's mandate is to help create business opportunities for Africa's rural producers and entrepreneurs through the increased demand for natural plant products.
